Understanding the different components of an assessment is extremely important to the child care/education field of work. Knowing why an assessment is important and how to use assessment for further intervention is a critical part of being a child care provider. There are many different moving parts to an assessment and each fit together to complete or work towards an overall goal for a child. Specifically, in this class I have learned that assessments must be authentic, this is the foundation for all assessments to function. We focused on three parts of assessment: Screening, Assessing, and Evaluation. Screening refers to different kinds of instruments used to identify children who may have developmental risks, delays, or disorders (Mindes & Jung, 2015). Assessing refers to the process of gathering information and making decisions (Mindes & Jung, 2015). Lastly, evaluation of children with special needs to develop interventions and monitor progress (Harewood, 2018). The moving parts of assessment are: Why we assess (Formative decisions vs. Summative decisions), who and what is assessed including children, the environments ( home and school), teachers, and the program, who we assess (formal and informal assessments (qualitative and quantitative), quality of assessments (validity and reliability), how assessments are conducted and implemented, interpreting assessment results for example standardized scores (norm referenced and criterion referenced), and how assessment information is shared with guardians (Harewood, 2018). My evidence for learning all of these components comes with completing five labs during the entire semester. The labs each focused on a different aspect of the assessment process and they built on each other. These are the labs in chronological order that I accomplished this semester: Running Records and Anecdotal Notes, Checklist, Scoring and Interpreting, Time Sampling, and Scoring and interpreting T-Scores and percentiles. Specifically, I want to use the “Scoring and Interpreting T-Scores and Percentiles” lab and the Teacher Interview as my evidence. I believe that this lab shows my knowledge about terminology because we did the most math in this lab, and we had to analyze and explain what the math meant from the scoring sheet and explain any recommendations for the child. I received a 9.25/10 on this assignment which proves that I was successfully able to observe children, score data, look at T-Scores and analyze the data. I also used mode, median, and mean within this lab to interpret the data and organize the scores. My teacher interview with Mrs. Diaz from the child development center is also an amazing piece of evidence that shows my understanding of how assessments work and what they are used for. During this interview I was able to learn the process of assessments, and some names of real assessments used in the infant room. I also realized how many different moving parts there are to a classroom and how important they all are. Mrs. Diaz explained to me that these assessments are the foundation of her class, because she is able to set objectives for the children after she observes. She also explained how family is so important and that she establishes a relationship with children and their families to be able to trust each other and communicate.
