As a child care provider implementing assessments is just half of the process, the real work comes in when you have the data. Teachers need to know how to read data, what to do with it, and how to make the most beneficial decisions for children in the classroom. During HDFS 421 we learned about informal and formal assessments. In the formal category we specifically learned about standardized and non-standardized tests. Two types of standardized tests are norm referenced and criterion referenced. Norm Referenced refers to how well a child does, compared to other children with similar characteristics (Harewood, 2018). Criterion Referenced refers to how well a child does based on a specified set of skills/behaviors arranged according to difficulty (Harewood, 2018). We also talked about types of scales, because when you understand a score you need to know how it relates to another score. There are four types of scores, nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. We used these kinds of scores and also mathematical terms like, range, mode, median, and mode, to find information from our data and make decisions and recommendations for children that we observed. Not only is it important to check your math and make sure you are data and findings are correct, but when you talk about the data or proceed to communicate with a parent there is a certain way to say where a child falls in a percentile or a ratio. You have to be aware of the language in order to communicate correctly, appropriately, and effectively. I have done all of this in my labs throughout this class. Specifically, I have done this in lab: Scoring and Interpreting T-Scores and Percentiles. We had to use many math equations to organize our data. Then when describing our data, we used sentences to explain percentiles and connected that to what we saw in our observation and recommended what we would do next. For example, in the lab I wrote, “Alex scores on the emotionally reactive scale corresponding to the 90thpercentile of the normative sample, this means that 90 percent of children in the normative sample received scores equal to or lower than Alex’s score.” I received a nine point two five out of ten on this assignment, so I feel that I have a good understanding on how to gather data, analyze, and then make recommendations or goals as the next steps for children in my future classroom.
